Verneuil’s disease is a suppurative hydrosadenitis, a disease of the apocrine sweat glands of the hair follicle, leading to abscesses, boils and even recurrent fistulas in the armpits, groin, buttock and breast folds.
1% of the population, i.e. 600,000 people in France. The disease is widely misdiagnosed by doctors, with an 8-year delay in diagnosis. The most common misdiagnoses are ingrown hairs, furunculosis, severe acne, anal fistula and Crohn’s disease.
Often found in overweight patients. Possibly associated with Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis. This suggests a link with the intestine, as these diseases are essentially infectious diseases of intestinal origin (see the articles in this blog on these diseases and how to treat them better and more naturally). Smoking is often an aggravating factor that needs to be addressed.
2/3 have the moderate form with only abscesses without fistulas, 1/3 have disabling fistulas and 1% have recurrent fistulas with surgical and scarring sequelae.
There is no treatment except surgery in severe cases to remove the infected cutaneous and subcutaneous portion. Removal of the hair follicles prevents recurrence, but scars take a long time to heal.
TNF alpha inhibitors are available in some countries, except France (no authorization), but with numerous side effects.
